How to Read App Ratings and Reviews Like a Pro

A star rating squeezes thousands of opinions into one number. Knowing how to look behind it helps you pick the right app the first time.

Look at the shape, not just the average

The rating breakdown matters. An app with mostly 5-star and 1-star reviews and little in between usually works brilliantly for some people and not at all for others, often because of a device or region issue. A steady curve peaking at 4 or 5 stars is a safer bet.

Weigh the number of ratings

Small samples swing wildly. Treat any rating with fewer than a few hundred votes as provisional, and lean on the written reviews instead.

Sort by most recent

Ratings build up over years. Recent reviews tell you whether the latest version is stable, whether ads have increased, or whether a subscription has replaced a one-off purchase.

Filter by your device

On Google Play, reviews are tailored to your device type by default. If you're shopping for a tablet or Chromebook app, check reviews from people on that form factor.

Spot unhelpful reviews

  • One-word reviews ("good", "nice") carry little information.
  • Very similar wording across many reviews can be a sign of paid reviews.
  • Complaints about unrelated things, like delivery times in a shopping app, don't tell you much about the app itself.

Check developer replies

Developers who answer reviews, explain fixes and follow up are more likely to keep improving their app.
